On the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Head of Uganda Delegation, Rt. Hon. Robina Nabbanja was awarded with a Global Inspirational Leadership (GIL) Award by the Center for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD) and Amazons Watch Magazine (AWM) during their Global Power Women Conference (GPWC) held at the Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY). This year’s conference was held under the theme: Advancing the transformative power of Technology Through a Woman’s Lens: Shaping the Future of Business and Governance”.
The Center for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD) is a global institution committed to empowering women and promoting leadership development whereas the Amazons Watch Magazine (AWM) is a leading platform that celebrates women’s achievements globally.
Nabanja who is the first female Prime Minister of Uganda, thanked God for life and also appreciated H.E the President of Uganda for giving women in Uganda a platform to make a contribution to the growth and development of their nation. She noted the substantial strides towards gender equality through progressive laws, policies, and budgets designed to empower women mentioning that, In Uganda; women occupy 46% of local government leadership positions, 33% of parliamentary seats, 43% of Cabinet positions and 51% of the Permanent Secretaries are women.
Notably, the Prime Minister posed a bit to thank Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the Minister for Health whom she introduced as a doctor, and referred to her as a mentor under whom she served as a State Minister.
It will be recalled that, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja served as State Minister of Health in charge of General Duties under the supervision of Dr. Aceng from 14th December 2019 until 8th June 2021 when she was named a Prime Minister. It is this period of close to two years of working together that Nabanja still remembers Dr. Aceng’s mentorship, support, hard work and strong stewardship at the helm of Uganda’s Health sector which she is never ashamed of, to credit the top-notch leader from Lango Region.
Like many Ugandans, she always applauds Dr. Aceng’s leadership in guiding the country through the challenging COVID-19 pandemic that impacted the entire world.
Alongside Nabanja, H.E Leaticia Ocampus, the First Lady of Paraguay, H.E Arya Ali the First Lady of Guyana, H.E Filomena Goncalves the Minister of Health of Cape Verde, Uganda’s Deputy Director General of Uganda Civil Aviation Authority among others, were equally awarded with this global award.
