Yesterday 6 September 2024, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Minister for Health and Lira City Woman MP, addressed the media and the nation to provide an update on the current situation of MPOX in Uganda. The disease, recently declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization, has been confirmed in several districts across the country.
Minister Aceng Ocero reported that MPOX has been confirmed in Kampala, Wakiso, Kasese, Mayuge, and Amuru districts, with a total of 10 infected persons. Fortunately, four of these individuals have since recovered, while the remaining six are receiving treatment at the National Isolation Center in Entebbe.
To manage the situation effectively, the Minister announced that all MPOX cases will be handled at Mulago National Referral Hospital and Entebbe Emergency Isolation Center. Additionally, vaccination efforts will target those most at risk, particularly individuals living in the Eastern border region with Kasese.
Dr. Aceng Ocero highlighted the signs and symptoms of MPOX, which include fever, sore throat, headache, back pain, low energy, and body aches, among others. She reassured the public that there will be no closure of schools and encouraged parents to prepare their children for the upcoming third term.
The Minister emphasized the importance of remaining calm and encouraged the public to adhere to public health measures such as hand washing and sanitizing. She also extended a message of reassurance to tourists, investors, and visitors, stating that Uganda is safe and open for business.
