Lira City – In a defining political turn, Speaker Daniel Okello has officially crossed over to the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), receiving a heroic welcome during a vibrant ceremony held at Chorghum Garden. The event brought together enthusiastic councilors and supporters from Adyel, Ojwina, and Gomola Divisions, who pledged their full backing and endorsed Okello as a potential UPC flag bearer in the next elections.

Previously affiliated with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Okello acknowledged that although he won his seat on the NRM ticket, it was UPC supporters who overwhelmingly voted him into office. “I joined politics during my university days,” he shared. “Even during moments of political suppression, I found guidance and encouragement from UPC leaders who championed transparency and accountability.”

Okello cited the influence of senior UPC stalwarts such as Harriet Apili, Jimmy James Michael Akena, Hon. Betty Amongi Akena, Hon. Mike Ogwang Olwa Veve, Mr. Obong Opeto, Hon. Obong Eyit, and Cilodyang as pivotal in shaping his political ideology. Their mentorship, he said, helped reinforce his values of service and integrity.

“I have read the UPC constitution, and I was drawn to its core principles of unity, good governance, and social justice,” Okello noted. “I now realize that the values I’ve always stood for are rooted in UPC. This is not just a political move—it is a return home.”

Describing himself as a “prodigal son,” Okello declared that rejoining UPC was a reclaiming of both heritage and belief. “I come from a strong UPC background. I can no longer betray that legacy,” he stated.

In a symbolic gesture, Okello handed over his NRM membership card and was officially issued his UPC card, marking his full commitment to the party. He now holds the roles of UPC Parish Treasurer and Workers’ Leader.

“I am not here to fight; I am here to serve,” he emphasized. “Let’s build mentorship anchored on truth and unity. Let us respect our constitution and values.”

Mzee Tom Richard Okello Apur, a revered elder, welcomed Okello back to the fold and urged him to remain loyal to the party. He also advised against contesting as an independent should he not win UPC primaries, stressing the party’s emphasis on unity and internal consensus.

Hon. Harriet Apili hailed Okello’s leadership qualities, recalling their first encounter at a council meeting where his command and presence left a lasting impression. Likewise, Janifer Akello, Lira City West Women Leader, lauded his integrity and commitment, describing him as “a principled, inspirational, and accountable leader who will uplift Lira.”

With Okello’s entry, the UPC gains not just a member, but a dynamic leader whose presence has already energized the party’s local structures—signaling a powerful new chapter in Lira’s political evolution.
