A recent report by Ismile Kabugu, Social Behavioural Officer at the Ministry of Health, reveals that Aleka sub county in Oyam District has the highest burden of malaria cases, with a staggering 77% infection rate. This was disclosed during a two-day National Malaria Elimination sensitization meeting held in Oyam district. Oyam town council and Abok sub-counties also have high malaria infection rate.
Kabugu identified Oyam, Kole, Lira City, and Dokolo districts as areas with high malaria burdens, where awareness campaigns and immunization efforts will be focused. The World Health Organization has verified the effectiveness of the malaria vaccine, prompting its pilot launch in high-burden districts.
Benson Walter Dilla Oyuku, LC5 Chairperson of Oyam District, applauded the Ministry of Health’s initiative, warning against fake healers and witch doctors claiming to treat malaria through prayers. Sgt Shilaku James, Resident District Commissioner, and Betty Owani, Secretary for Health and Community-Based Services, pledged support for awareness creation.
Malaria claims at least 98,000 Ugandan lives annually, primarily children and pregnant women. The Ministry of Health aims to immunize children aged six to 18 months, urging communities to embrace this life-saving intervention.
The fight against malaria requires collective effort. By supporting awareness campaigns and immunization programs, we can protect vulnerable populations and combat this deadly disease.
