Lira City | July 23, 2025 — The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), in partnership with the Debate Institute Africa, has taken a strategic step toward promoting digital literacy through school debates aimed at encouraging the adoption and responsible use of computers in Ugandan communities.
The latest edition of the UCC Debate Series – Northern Region, was held on Wednesday at Dara Christian High School in Lira City, drawing participation from 20 secondary schools across Northern Uganda.
These included St. Katherine Girls Secondary School, St. Mary’s Ediofe SS, Lango College, Comboni College, Kitgum Comprehensive SS, YY Okot, and others.
The central theme of the competition focused on how students, parents, teachers, and communities can embrace the use of computers to improve learning and communication.
The debate not only allowed students to showcase their public speaking and analytical skills but also served as a platform for collecting insights on digital trends and gaps in computer usage.
Harina Saviour, Public Relations Officer for Debate Institute Africa and the UCC Debate Series, emphasized the importance of such engagements.
“These debates help us gather vital data on how digital devices are used in homes and schools. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of Ugandans have digital skills. This initiative helps raise awareness and inspire change at the grassroots,” Harina explained.
At the end of the competition, St. Katherine Girls Secondary School was announced as the winner, with St. Mary’s Ediofe SS taking second place.Mr. Ainebyona Ezras, Headteacher of Dara Christian High School, expressed pride in hosting the event.
“This is an eye-opener for both our students and staff. We are proud to be part of this initiative that is transforming education through digital inclusion,” he remarked.
The UCC Debate Series is part of a nationwide campaign to promote responsible use of digital technology,
