Apac, Uganda – July 20, 2025The dusty village paths of Itwara in Ibuje Sub-County, Apac District, came alive yesterday with cheers, song, and celebration as 25 cyclists from Belgium-based NGO Velo Afrique arrived at New Generation Nursery and Primary School after an arduous fundraising ride from Entebbe through Jinja to Apac.
Led by their steadfast team leader, Jerome, Velo Afrique has long championed education in Uganda. Their commitment is not just symbolic — it’s physical.
They raise funds by riding hundreds of kilometers on bicycles, rallying support to improve education infrastructure in underprivileged communities.
Years ago, their efforts, alongside contributions from Hon. Sam Engola, Hon. Betty Engola, and their daughter, led to the construction of New Generation Nursery and Primary School (LCC/ED/ECD/04) — a dream that replaced the 9-kilometer journeys children once made to Lwala Primary School.
This week’s visit was more than just a return — it was a recommitment. As the cyclists wheeled into the school compound under the warm Apac sun, they were welcomed by jubilant children, proud parents, and an emotional community.
Children sang songs of welcome while elders clapped in rhythm, celebrating the partnership that has transformed their village.
Speaking to the crowd, Hon. Sam Engola emphasized the power of collective effort. “The community must come together to grow the nation. We must be open-minded and work hand in hand to shape a better future for our children,” he said, extending heartfelt thanks to the Belgian cyclists.
Hon. Betty Engola reaffirmed her dedication to community development:“We must grow together with our people. I will always do my best to support initiatives like this that bring real change,” she stated, drawing loud applause from parents and local leaders.
Jerome, representing Velo Afrique, stood humbled by the reception: “Thank you for trusting us with your vision. We are here because we believe in the power of education. With the resources we have, we will continue to do more to serve these wonderful kids,” he pledged.
Notable figures in the community, Sedrick Otolo and Brian Yeko Ongora, also addressed the children with messages of hope and empowerment.
“Your future starts here. Every day you come to this school, remember you are building the foundation for something great,” they encouraged.
Their words lit up young faces with hope — a generation inspired to dream bigger and aim higher.
The Velo Afrique team’s compassionate efforts remain anchored in their mission: to improve not only the school’s physical infrastructure but also the human resource capacity that drives quality education.
Their unwavering commitment is helping raise academic standards in Apac and beyond. In the smiles of children, in the applause of the community, and in the tireless pedaling of 25 determined cyclists — yesterday’s event was not just about a school visit. It was about solidarity, compassion, and a shared vision for a brighter future.
