LIRA, UGANDA – The Lango cultural institution has strongly condemned the rising use of illicit substances such as marijuana, mairunji, opium, and other harmful drugs among the youth in the region, calling it a threat to the cultural and social fabric of Lango.

‎‎Speaking during a courtesy visit by contestants of Miss Tourism Northern Uganda to his residence on Tuesday evening, the Paramount Chief of Lango, Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of drug abuse among young people in Lango.‎‎

“I’m shocked and disturbed by how our youths are indulging in drug abuse. It is not only harmful to their health but completely goes against the values of a focused and visionary generation,” Odongo Okune remarked.‎‎

He commended the National Drug Authority (NDA) for partnering with Miss Tourism Uganda and the Lango cultural leadership to combat the drug menace, particularly among the youth.‎‎

The Paramount Chief urged the contestants to become ambassadors of Lango culture and proudly promote their heritage.

“Culture is our first identity, and I call on every Lango youth to respect themselves, their bodies, and the values that define who we are,” he added.

‎‎Alfred Akali Oyom, an inspector with the National Drug Authority and one of the facilitators of the Miss Tourism Northern Uganda contest, reiterated NDA’s commitment to using cultural platforms to sensitize communities.

“Drug abuse is becoming widespread in Lango, and this threatens our social stability. We plan to work closely with the Paramount Chief to reverse this trend,” Akali said.‎‎

Gloria Alele, head of Miss Tourism Northern Uganda, highlighted the theme of this year’s pageant: “I Am My Culture.”

She noted that this year’s edition aims to promote and celebrate Lango culture on a national platform.‎‎

“In the previous contest, Lango shone brightly thanks to the blessings and support of our Paramount Chief. We believe we can replicate that success, and even go further this year,” Alele said.‎‎

She emphasized that their support for Lango culture is unwavering and said the beauty pageant is a platform to unite, empower, and inspire young women to embrace their heritage.‎‎

The Miss Tourism Northern Uganda election is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025, and will take place at St. Lira Hotel. The event is expected to attract cultural leaders, supporters of Lango heritage, and well-wishers from across the region.‎‎‎‎‎
