‎‎The world of football is in deep mourning following the untimely death of Portuguese international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on July 3, 2025, in Spain.

He was just 28 years old.‎‎According to Spanish authorities, the fatal accident occurred in the early hours of the morning along the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora.

Jota was reportedly traveling in a Lamborghini alongside his younger brother, André Silva, when the car suffered a tyre blowout during an overtaking attempt.

The vehicle lost control, veered off the road, and caught fire after hitting a barrier. Despite emergency services rushing to the scene, both men were pronounced dead at the site.‎‎The sudden and devastating loss has sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes pouring in from all over the world.

Liverpool Football Club, where Jota had become a fan favorite since joining in 2020, expressed their heartbreak, stating: “We are devastated. Diogo was more than a footballer—he was family.

Our thoughts are with his wife Rute, their children, and all who loved him.” The club has requested privacy for the family during this time of immense grief.‎‎Portugal’s national team, where Jota had been a key figure with 49 international caps and 14 goals, also paid tribute.

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo called the news “unbelievable and painful”, while Prime Minister Luís Montenegro offered national condolences and ordered a minute of silence before upcoming national events.‎‎

Jota’s death comes just days after he celebrated his wedding with longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025. The couple shared three young children.‎‎

An official investigation into the crash has been launched by the Guardia Civil, with preliminary reports pointing to a high-speed mechanical failure as the cause.

Both bodies have been transferred to Zamora for autopsies and formal identification, after which arrangements for repatriation to Portugal will be made.‎‎

As the football world continues to reel from the loss, memorials are being planned in Liverpool, Porto, and across Portugal. From teammates to fans, millions now grieve the passing of a player who was known not just for his goals, but for his humility, warmth, and work ethic.‎‎

Rest in Peace, Diogo Jota (1996–2025).‎
